Hasan Gedik Baths

In the upper Kelkit valley in Sivas Province, Suşehri is a Central Anatolian town where the North Anatolian Fault runs close to the surface, releasing thermal waters along geological weakness zones. The Hasan Gedik Baths belong to the Ottoman hammam tradition, which remains deeply alive in this mountain region that has preserved its bathing customs across the centuries.

The thermal water, at around 40 °C, is channelled through the hammam's rooms according to an unchanging ritual: the humid heat of the steam room, the warm marble of the göbek taşı — the navel stone — and the scrubbing and massage treatments passed from generation to generation form a sensory and cultural experience unique to the heart of Anatolia. Steam fills the vaulted space, erasing time and distance.

Sivas Province has exceptional Seljuk medieval heritage, and the high mountain landscape of the Kelkit valley — with its harsh winters and luminous summers — gives the baths their social and communal importance. To stop at the Hasan Gedik Baths is to participate in a living ancestral practice, far from any tourist reconstruction.
