Ulukışla Öküz Mehmet Paşa Baths

The Ulukışla Öküz Mehmet Paşa Baths are a historic Ottoman hammam in Ulukışla District of Niğde Province, set in the high Taurus Mountains along the ancient trade route through the Cilician Gates — the legendary mountain pass that Alexander the Great crossed on his way to Asia. Named after Öküz (Bull) Mehmet Paşa, a powerful early 17th-century Ottoman Grand Vizier celebrated for his extensive program of caravanserai and road-station construction across Anatolia, the hammam formed part of a complex serving merchants, soldiers, and pilgrims crossing the mountain barrier. The baths reflect the Ottoman state's deliberate investment in road-station infrastructure, recognising that hygienic and well-rested travellers contributed to the flow of commerce and communication across the empire.
