Başköy Baths

The Başköy Village Baths are a historic village hammam in Bilecik District of Bilecik Province in northwestern Anatolia, in the founding landscape of the Ottoman Empire where the imperial hammam tradition first penetrated Anatolian village life in the 13th and 14th centuries. Village hammams like those at Başköy were the most widespread and democratically accessible form of the Ottoman bathing institution, providing the weekly ritual of communal cleanliness to ordinary farming communities far from the grand imperial baths of Bursa and Istanbul. These baths represent the grassroots expression of Ottoman bath culture — the simple stone structure that served a village community's essential hygienic and social needs across many generations of rural Anatolian life.
