Aşağıköy Köy Baths

The Aşağıköy (Lower Village) Baths are a historic village hammam in Bilecik District of Bilecik Province in the early Ottoman heartland of northwestern Anatolia. Village hammams of this modest type — single or simple double-hall stone structures serving small communities — were the most socially fundamental form of the Ottoman bath tradition, present across virtually every settlement of significance throughout the empire's Anatolian territories. The Aşağıköy baths served the community of this small agricultural village in the weekly bathing ritual that was the cornerstone of Islamic hygiene practice and one of the most socially important regular events in the calendar of traditional Anatolian village life, where neighbours gathered in the steam to share news, strengthen bonds, and mark the passage of the week.
