Pelitözü Köyü Baths

The Pelitözü Village Baths are a historic village hammam in Bilecik District of Bilecik Province in the early Ottoman heartland of northwestern Anatolia, where the imperial tradition of communal bathing was first established in the villages and towns of the founding Ottoman beylik. Like the many other village hammams scattered across the Bilecik landscape, these baths served a small agricultural community with the essential weekly bathing facility required by Islamic law, providing the ritual cleanliness that was simultaneously a religious obligation and a social pleasure in traditional Anatolian community life. The preservation of such modest rural hammams in the region of the Ottoman heartland reflects the deep historical roots of communal bathing culture in the territory where the empire was born.
