The Sığacık Baths are a historic hammam in the charming harbour town of Sığacık in Seferihisar District, on the Aegean coast of İzmir Province, where a well-preserved 16th-century Ottoman castle encircles a picturesque fishing harbour near the ruins of ancient Teos. Teos was a celebrated Ionian Greek city, birthplace of the lyric poet Anacreon and the philosopher Protagoras, and its harbour at Sığacık continued as a maritime centre through Byzantine and Ottoman times, with the castle built to protect the anchorage from Aegean piracy. The combination of ancient Ionian ruins, Ottoman castle architecture, fishing harbour, and the traditional neighbourhood hammam in a single small coastal town makes Sığacık a microcosm of the extraordinarily layered historical character of the Turkish Aegean coast.
