Varoş Baths

The Varoş Baths are historic public baths in the outer district (varoş) of Sinop, Turkey's most northerly city, positioned on a dramatic peninsula at the furthest point of Anatolia into the Black Sea, a city whose extraordinary natural harbour has made it strategically important from Greek colonial times to the present. In Ottoman cities, the varoş referred to the settlement beyond the inner walled city or citadel — typically housing artisans, traders, and agricultural workers — and the Varoş Baths served this outer community with the bathing facility that was as essential to Ottoman neighbourhood life as the local mosque or fountain. Sinop's naval heritage, its role as a Black Sea fishing port, and the constant passage of sailors and merchants through its harbour all contributed to a sustained demand for bathing facilities serving diverse communities.
