The Thermes Sextius in Aix-en-Provence stand on the very site where the Romans founded Aquae Sextiae in 123 BC — "the waters of Sextius" — whose qualities were already noted by ancient historians Strabo, Pliny and Livy. Public Roman baths were built here in the second half of the 1st century, before being destroyed around 300 AD when Christianity, having become the state religion, banned the use of public baths.

Their remains lay hidden until 1704, when archaeological excavations followed the demolition of an old house on the site. It was not until 12 March 1913 that Aix-en-Provence was officially declared a "thermal town," crowning two millennia of continuous use of the same spring.

Insider tip — The Thermes d'Aix-en-Provence draw from ancient springs that have been in use since the Roman general Sextius Calvinus founded the city Aquae Sextiae in 123 BC, making this one of Europe's oldest continuously used thermal sites. The calcium-sulfate water emerges at a comfortable 36°C. The central location in Aix's old town means you can combine a thermal visit with Cezanne's studios, the vibrant Cours Mirabeau, and celebrated Provencal markets. Advance reservation is essential for wellness programs.
