Bir Setta (Spring Number Six) in Egypt's Western Desert is a sodium-rich artesian thermal spring in the remote landscape of the Farafra or Siwa oasis region, where ancient groundwater from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer emerges warm from the desert floor in one of the most isolated environments on Earth. The Western Desert oases of Egypt — Siwa, Farafra, Dakhla, Kharga, and Bahariya — have been inhabited since prehistoric times by communities sustained entirely by artesian spring water in a landscape that otherwise receives almost no rainfall. Bir Setta's sodium-rich waters reflect the mineral character of groundwater that has percolated through Cretaceous sandstone formations for thousands of years before reaching the surface in the Egyptian Sahara.

Insider tip — Bir Setta, known locally as Source No. 6, is one of the dozens of natural springs that define the Siwa Oasis in Egypt's far northwest, near the Libyan border. The oasis springs bubble up through the desert floor, creating palm-shaded pools that have refreshed travelers on the ancient caravan route since Antiquity. Alexander the Great passed through Siwa to consult the Oracle of Amun, and the waters have been celebrated ever since. The surrounding salt lakes and mud-brick ruins of the ancient Shali fortress make Siwa Egypt's most atmospheric oasis destination.
