Big Hot Springs, known locally as Baw Yai, is one of Laos's largest natural geothermal spring sites, located in the jungle-clad mountains of northern Laos near Muang Ngoi, where high-temperature geothermal waters emerge from the earth in a remote forested setting accessible only by river boat or mountain trail. The springs' exceptional flow volume and temperature — reaching above 60°C at the source — create a dramatic natural bathing complex of pools and channels formed by mineral-deposited travertine terraces shaped over millennia of geothermal activity. The combination of spectacular natural travertine formations, surrounding primary forest, and the warm Mekong tributary landscape makes Big Hot Springs one of the most geologically impressive and visually striking geothermal sites in mainland Southeast Asia.
