Mlibizi Hot Springs is a natural geothermal site on the western shore of Lake Kariba in Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe, where bicarbonate-rich warm water surfaces from the ancient basement near the shoreline of the vast artificial lake created by the Kariba Dam in the late 1950s. Lake Kariba, the world's largest man-made reservoir by volume, provides a spectacular backdrop for the springs, with the flooded drowned trees of the original Zambezi valley, the rich birdlife, and the tiger fish fishing for which Kariba is world-famous. The combination of Zimbabwe's extraordinary geological and wildlife heritage with the human drama of the Kariba Dam — which displaced tens of thousands of BaTonga people — gives Mlibizi's thermal springs a deeply layered historical and environmental character.
