Indonesia owes its thermal richness to its unique position along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the intensely active volcanic zone running the length of the archipelago from north to south. On Java, the most populous and most volcanic island, hot springs often sit alongside smoking craters and dramatic mountain scenery. On Sumatra, wilder nature and ever-present rainforest create a more remote setting, where reaching a spring sometimes means a trek through the jungle. Other islands in the archipelago, less familiar to travellers, hold their own geothermal treasures, often little known even to Indonesians themselves.
