Borjomi Mineral Springs in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia represent the country's most internationally famous thermal heritage, with the Borjomi brand of naturally sparkling bicarbonate-sodium mineral water recognised across the former Soviet Union and increasingly worldwide. The springs emerge at 37°C from a narrow gorge of the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, one of the largest protected forest areas in the Caucasus, and their ferruginous-tinged waters have attracted visitors since Russian imperial soldiers discovered them in 1829. Tsar Nicholas II established a summer residence here, and today the town's restored spa park, with its ornate 19th-century architecture and natural spring pavilions, remains one of the most atmospheric thermal destinations in the Caucasus region.
