The Nyamyumba Hot Springs, known locally by the Kinyarwanda name Amashyuza, are natural hot springs located on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu in Nyamyumba Sector, Rubavu District, Western Province, Rwanda. Situated approximately 7 kilometres from the town of Gisenyi, the springs consist of two pools locally named "male" and "female." They lie within the western branch of the East African Rift System, near the Virunga volcanic complex, which accounts for their geothermal heating mechanism. Tourism and therapeutic bathing activities have developed around the springs, which are visited by both local residents and international tourists.
Insider tip — Nyamyumba hot springs emerge along the eastern shore of Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes, where volcanic activity beneath the lake floor drives thermal fluids to the surface. The sulfurous pools overlook an expanse of blue water backed by the green hills of Congo across the border, creating one of central Africa's most scenic bathing settings. Local fishermen from the Nyamyumba peninsula often stop at the springs to warm up after early morning canoe trips on the cold lake. The springs are accessible from Gisenyi town by motorcycle taxi.
