Pervane Baths

Pervane Baths is a historic Turkish hammam whose name commemorates either a Pervane (butterfly or moth in Persian — one who circles a flame, a Sufi metaphor for the soul drawn to the divine light) or the historical Muhyiddin Süleyman ibn Ali el-Mübarizeddin, known as the Pervane, the powerful Seljuk vizier of Rum who effectively controlled the Sultanate of Rum in the thirteenth century after the Mongol conquest and under whose patronage significant architectural projects were undertaken across Anatolia in the tradition of Seljuk public building. As a figure of both historical and spiritual significance, 'Pervane' in a hammam name carries the dual weight of specific historical patronage memory and the Sufi poetic association of the soul's yearning for divine light — making this one of the more culturally layered hammam names in the Ottoman and Seljuk tradition.
