The Beyobası Baths are a historic Ottoman hammam with naturally sulphurous mineral water in Pazar District of Tokat Province in northern Anatolia, in the Kelkit River valley of the Pontic mountains that separate the Anatolian plateau from the Black Sea coast. The sulphurous thermal springs of the Pazar area reflect the geological activity of the North Anatolian Fault zone, which produces mineral-rich waters across a broad band of northern Anatolia from the Marmara region to the eastern Black Sea mountains. These sulphurous baths have long been valued within a thermal tradition reaching back to antiquity, giving the Beyobası facility a dual character as both a social and hygienic hammam and a thermal spring associated with well-being in this mountainous region.
Insider tip — Beyobası near Reşadiye in the Tokat province sits in the North Anatolian Fault zone of the eastern Black Sea highlands, where intense seismic activity produces abundant geothermal springs. The sulfurous waters here serve a mountainous landscape of the Kelkit valley, where the same geological forces that produce devastating earthquakes also create the hot mineral springs that have provided warmth and healing in the remote Pontic mountains since antiquity.
