Çaput Baths

The Çaput Baths are a historic Ottoman hammam in Gümüşhane District, the administrative centre of Gümüşhane Province in the rugged mountain terrain between Turkey's Black Sea coast and the eastern Anatolian plateau. Gümüşhane — whose name translates as Silver House — was historically a major silver and copper mining centre whose mineral wealth supported a relatively prosperous Ottoman community capable of investing in public bath construction as an expression of civic culture. The baths served the miners, craftsmen, and agricultural communities of this mountain district, providing the essential weekly bathing ritual in an environment where private facilities were unavailable and where the hammam was the only practical means of achieving the thorough cleanliness required by Islamic law.
