The Çifte Baths of Ortahisar are a double-chambered Ottoman hammam in Ortahisar District, Trabzon Province on the eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey. The çifte design, with separate sections for men and women either side by side or back to back, was a common feature of larger Ottoman hammams that wished to provide full bathing services to all members of the community simultaneously. Trabzon's long history as a Byzantine and then Ottoman trading port gave its hammams an important role in the social life of a diverse coastal community.

Insider tip — Çifte Hamam (double bath) of Ortahisar, the central district of Trabzon (ancient Trebizond). Trabzon was the capital of the Empire of Trebizond (1204-1461), the last Byzantine state to resist the Crusaders. The city preserves the magnificent Hagia Sophia church (13th c.) and a lively old town. The double hammam served men and women separately according to Ottoman tradition.
