Paşa Baths of Gümüşhane

The Paşa Baths of Gümüşhane are a historic Ottoman hammam in Gümüşhane District of Gümüşhane Province in the mountainous landscape of northeastern Turkey. Named for the paşa (senior official) who endowed or administered the bath, they served the residents of a historically important mining and administrative town that was once significantly larger and more prosperous than its contemporary form, having declined as its silver mines were exhausted over the 19th century. Gümüşhane's position on the route between the Black Sea port of Trabzon and the eastern fortress city of Erzurum gave it strategic and economic significance that supported investment in the public bath facilities commemorated in these historic baths.
