Komakusa no Yu, in the town of Komagane, Nagano Prefecture, taps sodium-chloride thermal water at 40°C, with an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna.

Insider tip — Komagane is the base for the Central Alps Ropeway — which ascends to the Senjojiki Cirque at 2,612 meters, a glacial bowl ringed by jagged peaks of the Kiso Mountains where komakusa (Dicentra peregrina), the queen of alpine flowers, blooms pink against the bare rock in summer. The onsen is named for this delicate flower — a perfectly fitting tribute to the mountain landscape above. Ride the ropeway at dawn for the finest light on the cirque walls, then descend to soak in Komakusa no Yu.
